Allergan Announces the 50 in 5 Challenge
Introducing a Landmark Partnership Between Allergan and the Aesthetic Surgeon Community
According to the most recent procedural statistics report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 2 million
cosmetic surgeries were performed in 2007.1 Breast augmentation, the second leading cosmetic surgery in the U.S., grew at a rate of 4.1% with 399,440
breast implant procedures performed last year.1
Reoperation rates continue to be an area of concern although the number of breast augmentations has increased annually and overall patient satisfaction
remains consistently high. The Allergan Core Study reported results based on 4 year data that revealed the incidence of reoperation in 455 primary augmentation patients was 23.5%.2
For revision augmentation subjects involved in the trial (n=147), reoperation rates were even HIGHER AT 35.3%2. The primary
reason reported for reoperation in both augmentation and revision patients was capsular contracture, followed by implant malposition, ptosis, and hematoma/seroma (Table 1)2.

The 50 in 5 Challenge
As aesthetic surgeons, our leading goal is to safely provide excellent cosmetic outcomes for women seeking breast augmentation or reconstruction.
That is why we have introduced this landmark professional education initiative called the 50 in 5 Challenge. Simply stated, this program is designed to provide
aesthetic surgeons education centered on best practices to help reduce the incidence of breast implant revision by 50% within 5 years. To take the first step in
achieving this goal, the Allergan Breast Aesthetics Executive Council – a distinguished advisory panel of 10 internationally recognized leaders in breast surgery –
has developed core practice principles focused on four key areas directly related to reducing revisions and improving patient outcomes. These areas include:
- Patient Education / Evaluation
- Pre-Operative Planning
- Surgical Technique
- Post-Operative Management
